A Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) is a trained professional who specializes in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of communication and swallowing disorders. SLPs work with individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly, to address various issues related to speech, language, voice, and fluency.

What qualifications do speech therapists have?

SLPs must have a master's degree from an accredited university as well as a license to practice from the state. Many SLPs are also accredited by ASHA (American Speech Language Hearing Association).

Who needs speech therapy?

Speech therapy can be beneficial to many types of people with many types of delays or diagnoses. From a toddler who is delayed in saying their first words to an elderly person who has had a stroke- anyone with impaired communication can benefit from speech therapy. At Leap we focus on children and young adults who have impaired communication due to a developmental disability but we also see children who have speech delays and articulation disorders.

If you have concerns about your child's speech and language development he best way is to schedule a comprehensive evaluation with a licensed SLP. You can also check the communication milestones from ASHA (American Speech Language Hearing Association) here

What does a speech therapy session look like?

Speech therapy sessions can look different based on the age, diagnosis, and treatment goals for the client. For many clients speech therapy is play based and child led. For other speech therapy may look like practicing interview and independent living skills. If you have more questions about what speech therapy would look like for your child you can contact us

How are therapy goals determined?

After a comprehensive evaluation has been preformed your SLP will closely evaluate your child's skills and area's of growth. They will then create a treatment plan that includes goals that are attainable and functional using their expertise in speech and language development and any input you provide. Creating goals is a collaborative effort between SLP, family and any other experts that know your child well.
